Avery and Kit Sturgess are your hosts; Lavender Cottage is our property.
Kit and Avery have lived in the New Forest for over 20 years, and walked a dog just about every day in the New Forest, in all weathers.
Having grown up around farming people, and raised two boys here, we have embraced a way of life here, enjoying the outdoors. The boys have paddled in the streams. Played hide and seek in the woods. Swum in the sea. Dug in the sand. Built sand castles. Climbed trees. Played geocash. Played rounders with our darling Misty dog. Flown kites. Learned to ride bikes. Sledged in the snow. Grown up with Scouts and explorers and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme for young people. Navigated on night hikes, learned camp craft skills, first aid, how to build a decent den in the woods, and the value of a good coat, comfortable walking boots, a map and a compass!
They learned to sail dinghies on Saltern's Lake, and both have a keen sense of adventure. We have been incredibly lucky to live here and be able to be a part of this beautiful place.
We now are very pleased to be able to share our love of this area with you, and invite you to book Lavender Cottage for a holiday. We hope you will have a wonderful time. We have made a book at Lavender Cottage which includes a wealth of suggestions of places to eat, places to visit, things to do, and favourite walks. There are far too many things to do to put all of them on here, but here are a few.
Pack a baguette, a cake and a drink (or other delights) from our award wining Brockenhurst Bakers, and head out into the New Forest National Park on foot or by bicycle, and explore the glorious trails and paths. Don't forget your camera.
You will often see wildlife on your travels. A variety of birds, occasionally deer, and of course the resident ponies, donkeys, cattle and occasionally pigs!
Bikes can he hired 500m away from Lavender Cottage, by the train station.
For those who prefer short walks, there is a short circuit around the village via Meerut road which rarely fails to go past local ponies and donkeys on route. Maybe the dogs need to stretch their legs for a short walk. Maybe stop in the village for a coffee or some shopping on the way back.
It is also only a short walk to access miles and miles of beautiful trails and scenery in the wilder National Park. Head out past the school, cross open grazing land to North Weirs and a short way along here you may be reaching for your camera. Continue to Beachern Wood car park, and this is a complete gateway to beautiful National Park land, with a variety of grassy open spaces perfect for picnics and games; river walks, wooded paths and tracks and trails for exploring.
There are plenty of old and characterful New Forest pubs, both within a short stroll of Lavender Cottage, and dotted around fabulous walks locally.
Brockenhurst has a wealth of good places to eat breakfast lunch and tea, traditional village shops for provisions, and amenities, and good transport networks if you don't have a car. (Train 500m and bus stop almost outside the house).
In summer the Forest Tour buses offer 2 routes of exploration that stop outside Lavender Cottage.
If you fancy booking a bit more adventure, there are sailing trips in the solent, horse rides, Paulton's Park, The Motor Museum at Beaulieu, zip wires into the sea, and many more!
